Before we can think of a time when we would love our partner, we first have to find out what they really like and don't like, and vice versa. Of course when you're young, it's easy to get wrapped up in what you think your child will like. You think, "If he or she didn't like pizza, that would be great, because I don't like pizza." But as a child, there is not much to say. They are so very young and don't have the ability to weigh in on what they don't like. If they tell you they don't like something, then you know exactly what they don't like. But as a parent, when we have children, we get wrapped up in the things that we think they'll like. It's hard to say, "We'll try this and see how it goes." But when we're not sure if what they're actually into is appropriate, it can often be best to have an open mind. We shouldn't believe everything we see, and we should let them make their own choices. There is a long story I'll share with you on this topic. This story has nothing to do with what food and drink are allowed, but it does have to do with getting out of a marriage. When my son was a teenager, I wasn't planning on having him go through that next phase where he wanted to get married. In fact, my son knew that marriage was not in his future, and I was in no hurry to get him married, anyway. He was watching so many male friends marry. One day, when he was at his friend's house, he wanted to talk to some guy. But when he was done talking to that guy, he told me. "Dad, I don't like what I'm doing. My friend is married, and I don't want to be like him." I realized that, just like when my daughter made the same request for her husband, I should have listened. Now, during those teen years, it was really all about food and drink. At that time, my son's best friend was becoming one of the hottest guys in town. So one day, I went to the clubhouse, which happens to be close to where he lived, to grab a few drinks, just to have a few, and go with him. He seemed to really enjoy it, and we talked for a while. Eventually, I noticed him drinking from a beer bottle. I asked him if it was okay to do so, and he said it was fine, but that he didn't like the taste of the beer. I had him go and get another drink, and we talked some more. After a while, he got up and left, saying he had to go to the bathroom, and that he just needed to pee.
